It’s a sure bet I have spent a years earnings on Burrell Education Courses alone. They are fantastic! Exercise and physiotherapy in pregnancy was always a bit of a scary area for me. When I was pregnant I realised how complex, different and difficult pregnancy can be for women. But this course changed that.
From the hormones of pregnancy to a whole module on delivery and birth, the background information was incredibly well researched, up to date and I am now very confident in the treatment and exercise prescription during pregnancy.
Let’s be real – when you think of exercise in pregnancy you think of relaxing yoga or Pilates (I teach both of these and they can be kinda boring during pregnancy especially towards the end). But the movement patterns and functional exercises taught blew my mind…who knew exercise during pregnancy could be so fun and functional! We are talking dead lifts, squats, lifting weights overhead – tough functional exercises that can make you work hard and sweat!
What did I lean?
A shit ton of new exercises that I even use with my non-pregnant patients and new mums during MamaFit classes. I’ve got a much thorough understanding of how the body changes during pregnancy, and it took aware my fear of working with a pregnant patient.
A big module in this course was pelvic girdle pain in pregnancy. IT HAS NOTHING, let me repeat NOTHING to do with your pelvis going out of alignment (or even the hormone Relaxin which gets a lot of the blame for pain during pregnancy). I think I’ll write a separate blog about that but unless your pubic symphysis has separated causing serious pain and inability to walk the problem is not instability. It’s to do with a lot of factors like rapidly changing posture, growing babies and the brain!
